Mononucleosis, or “mono” for short, is a common infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is primarily spread through contact with infected saliva, often through kissing or sharing drinks or utensils. Symptoms of mono can include fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and a rash. While most people recover from mono within a few weeks, some may experience fatigue and other symptoms for months.
There is no specific cure for mono, but treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Getting enough rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage symptoms. In some cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed to reduce the severity and duration of the illness.
